About Me

Hi! My name is Harrison Gardner. I'm 23 years old and have recently graduated from WGU with a bachelor's degree in software development. I have been interested in programming ever since I was little. I wanted to be able to make games, like the ones I was playing at the time, and learning to program was the best way to get started. I have since found that not only do I enjoy making games, but I just enjoy programming in general. Every project I work on brings new opportunities to learn and overcome interesting challenges. I hope one day to be making interesting software that can inspire others to also learn how to program.

NPC Quest

NPC Quest is a small game made over the course of 48 hours for the GMTK Game Jam 2023. I placed in the top 16% of all 6,818 submissions. While not the greatest game ever made, this game jam was a chance for me to apply the knowledge I had been gaining from all of my previous projects. I am incredibly happy with the amount of work I was able to complete in just 48 hours and the overall quality of the game. The scope of the game was a bit too large for a comfortable development experience, but I believe small projects will still help me better plan future projects, both big and small.

GO! GO! Hamster Chef!

"GO! GO! Hamster Chef!" is a game created for the "Spring N64 Style Graphics Jam #2" game jam on itch.io that, at the time of writing this, has 23.7K downloads. The game was created in collaboration with 6 other talented developer. The original version was made over the course of about a month and a half and took first place in the game jam. This has been one of my favorite projects I have worked on. The excitement that collaboration brought during development was incredible. Everyday meant seeing the incredible things others were working on, as well as getting to show other what I was creating. I loved being able to talk with others about issues I was running into or helping out others with the issues they were encountering. Working together to solve various issues helped me grow rapidly as a developer and I enjoyed every minute of it. This project has sparked further collaboration with some of the members of the team on current and future projects as well as a potential company built around the success of this project.

The Sorrow of Silk

The Sorrow of Silk is an atmospheric, 3D platformer game, created in two weeks for Buddy Up Jam: Winter 2023 (theme: "Soft") and ranked 3rd. This project was the first time I had collaborated with complete strangers. It was an exciting experience learning how the ebb and flow of a brand new team worked and how to get acclimated to that. Not only did this project help me to further solidfy my knowledge of Unity and C#, but it also introduced me to new tools to help me plan out my projects, such as Notion. This project showed me how much I enjoy collaboration and has made me seek that out more and more.

This Site

My portfolio website has been a good opportunity to refresh my knowledge on working with HTML, CSS, JS, and PHP. I find it very enjoyable to work on the full range of a website, from the looks to creating the database behind it.

Warming Woods

Warming woods is a game made in Unity for a 72 hour game jam. It placed 11th out of 115 entries. For this game jam I kept the scope smaller and focused on building out a much more polished project. Having ample time for ensuring everything worked well made both the experience and final project better.
